THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PLACE

Ranschburg was the head physician of the Psychiatric Ward at the Apponyi Polyclinic from 1916. In 1943, he treated those in need for free. His importance at the time is discussed by dr. Pisztora (Pisztora 1993: 266). However, in that year, a new law came out, banning Jewish physicians from practicing, so Ranschburg had to cease his research at the Polyclinic. .

This is where Pál Ranschburg created his third laboratory, where the paid physicians included Irén Kaufmann, Sára Krausz, Júlia György, and Samu Frankl. Mrs. Alfonz Weisz, the first child of baron Mór Herzog and wife of industrial magnate Manfréd Weisz’s son, Alfonz, also worked with them; she conducted twin studies under Ranschburg’s direction.

THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE

In 1882, the decision was made that outstanding physicians trained at university clinics should be provided a space to practice. Therefore, seven university professors decided to open the “Budapest General Clinic”, and in 1904 bought the plot under 14 Szövetség Street to build an outpatient clinic. The Szövetség Street division was opened in 1907 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph, and in 1921, it was renamed as “Gróf Apponyi Albert Polyclinic”. Its head physicians included several important scientists (Tibor Germán, Géza Lobmayer, Géza Petényi, Lajos Török, and Pál Ranschburg), who, besides healing, also held lectures for medical students in the institution’s lecture room.
