THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PLACE

Pál Ranschburg and his family got baptized on 31 August 1919. This event took place in the chapel of the Social Mission Association’s headquarterson Krisztina körút. The ceremony was held in the chapel of the Social Mission Association because of the work relationship which developed during the training of social service officers (the Social Mission Association had asked Ranschburg to participate in the training of social service officers).

They were baptized by Father dr. Antal Schütz, a Piarist professor, who himself held a doctorate in psychology. Ranschburg asked Károly Schafferto be his godparent. His connection with Christianity was facilitated by school and friends, but the decision was made due to the anti-Semitic atmosphere. In 1944, the baptism did not save him from persecution, however, as only Jews baptized before August 1st, 1919, were exempt from it. .

THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE

The Social Mission Association was the first Hungarian female monastic congregation and it was founded to help the poor in 1908,under the leadership of Edith Farkas. The Mission grew out of Catholic women’s movements of the early 20th century: the Women’s Protecting Organization and the Patronage Organization. Edith Farkas created a community of professional, well-trained nuns focusing on women’s issues. They held social and leadership training courses, and operated mission houses, schools, day care centers, soup kitchens and orphanages. They performed nationwide organizing work among Catholic women, who formed women’s associations and youth groups. They had their own press and published books. The central building was built in 1911.
