THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PLACE

Founded in 18811882,the university department of Neurology and Psychiatry was housed in Rókus Hospital. This year, thelunatic observation subdepartmentstarted operating with the leadership of university professor Károly Laufenauer. The department served healing and educational purposes as well. In the laboratory connected to the “observatory”, Károly Schaffer also worked with Laufenauer.

During his university studies, Pál Ranschburg completed his histopathology practice here, together with Artúr Sarbó and Kálmán Pándy. Due to reconstruction works, the department moved to Buda for a short time in 1889, but the connected histopathology laboratory received two rooms as a compensation in the main university building at 26 Üllői Road (the small room was shared with neurologist Károly Schaffer).

THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE

The hospital was founded in 1798 under the name “Pest Civilian Public Hospital”. A poor house also operated at the premises. This is where Ignác Semmelweiss took over the leadership of the newly independent obstetrics department in 1851. In 1875, the hospital took over the former poorhouse building, and along with it the treatment of syphilitic female patients. In 1898, two years after Roentgen’s invention, the first central X-ray laboratory in Europe was founded here.
